What Should I Look For in a Diet?
Today, there are more diet choices on the market than ever before. There seem to be countless new pills, books, plans, and professionals all promising exceptional, quick, results, with little effort on the part of the dieter everywhere you turn. With all of the information being thrown at you, it can be extremely difficult to choose a diet that is both safe and effective. Here are a few diet selection principles to help you break through the confusion.
The key to choosing a successful diet plan is to pick one that will work for you. It is very common for dieters to choose a plan based simply on things they have heard, or because they know someone who the used the diet with some success. Just because your next door neighbor lost forty pounds on the raw food diet, does not mean that the same will happen for you. You should select a plan that will help you work toward your personal goals, one that will work well for you, and one that you can easily stick to daily. Choosing a diet just because someone else tried it, usually ends in failure. Find a diet that will allow you to eat foods from many different food groups, and incorporates foods you enjoy. The more the diet allows you to lead a normal life, the better your chances of success, if a diet forces you to spend hours in the kitchen preparing complex meals etc, then you just won’t have the time or will power to stick to it for very long.
Selecting a diet that encourages breaks every couple of weeks can also be quite beneficial. This break will give you the opportunity to indulge some of your cravings, and it will give you something to look forward to during the time you are sticking to a more strict diet. This break does not give you permission to pig out and eat anything you want in huge quantities though. It does take willpower, but you need to have just a little bit of the foods you have been craving, that will satisfy your craving (for a bit) and stop you ruining your diet by pigging out.
It is always a good idea to contact your physician or a dietician before starting any new diet. Take your time and research diets thoroughly, you want to make sure the diet you choose will promote a healthy lifestyle, incorporate a bit of exercise, and create changes that you can stick with for the long term.
